Warrior Passage learns about the Sword and Social Media?

We have had a few weeks off due to the extra week in the month.  I hope you all enjoyed the break but it is time to get back to it.  Over the last two sessions  The mentees learned about the Sword instructed by Mentor Shiron Vick and other from the first session.  This was a very informative lesson, Mr. Vick has a gift for breaking down the scriptures to a level the mentees understand.  We discussed how to use the word as a two edged sword to destroy the works of the enemy in our personal life. The youth was taught in order to use the word as a weapon, and we must consistently read the bible. The main bible verses were Hebrews 4:12 and Ephesians 6:18.


In the second session, Mentor Antoine Clark taught is first lesson on College, and encouraged all mentees that this is a necessary step in life if you want to be successful.  There are currently over 131 universities, colleges, or community colleges in NC alone, so no excuses.  The next session was about how to guard your reputation in the current age of social media.  What goes online stays online, what you text stays a text.  There is no "real" delete anymore.  The mentees were challenged to think twice about posting to Facebook and texting messages that should not be sent.

We Beat the Street, and how to get a Job!

Mentor Shiron Vick taught a very important lesson on how on the armor of God, the shield is not just for you, but it is for you and your brother. He donated books to the mentees that everyone one should read if they get the chance. The Three Doctors have written more than one book, but we discussed "We Beat the Street". Info from their site, the book

"details our inspirational story of how we overcame obstacles and became doctors. Geared towards a younger audience, middle school and young adults, We Beat the Street offers instructional, dramatic dialogue through detailed life experiences."

The Life and Work Skills descuss job interviews. We interviewed six of the mentees and gave out a prize to the young men that interviewed the best! Mentees were also encouraged to attend the College Fair at the Dream Center.

How to get a Job!!!

For last warrior passage meeting we had 11 mentors in attendance.  After the spiritual development, the boys had the first Life and Work Skills session.  The lesson was  about "Dressing for success",  Mentor Eugene Warren showed a PowerPoint presentation. We also gave out a sheet asking the Warriors to answer 2 of 3 questions for next session.

Mentor Chris Phillips had all of the boys line up and went over the proper procedures on how to acquire and applications. They were told to fill out the application and bring them back filled out next week. All applications will be received so that we can move forward with the interviewing process for next session. The mentee who properly fills out the application and goes through the interviewing process correctly as required will receive the job and win a gift certificate.

Breast Plate of Righteousness

Last meeting the young men learned about the breast plate of righteousness in a lesson taught by Kamau Henderson and Wellington Scott.  In Isaiah 59, the Lord put on righteousness as a breastplate and went out to fight evil and corruption. "And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke" (Isaiah 59:16-17).

In the second session the mentees went through a series of real life situations and discussed what is the right decision to make when you are encountered with adversity.  Next meeting will be February 11 at 10a.m., were the Life and Work Skills group will begin there lessons in the second session.

Armor of God- Belt of Truth

The Warrior Passage meetings was very engaging this week starting with an discussion of the belt of truth.  Deacon Kevin Dozier lead the discussion that involved all of the young men and some of the other mentors also.


Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth - Ephesians 6:14 NKJV


Truth is the sincerity of the heart. Sincerity leads us to be open to God. It keeps our motives pure, devoid of malice and wickedness towards our fellow men. Are you seeking spiritual gifts as an aid to popularity or a means of serving God better? Keeping our hearts pure is essential if we are to be effective in spiritual warfare. This is the belt of truth.


The next session of the meeting was taught by Bruce Bean.  They perform exercises based on the TV show, "The Biggest Loser".  The workout session was intense and everyone was eventually eliminated from the exercises.

Protecting your Chest with the Armor!

Mentor Wellington Scott led the Spiritual development groups discussing the different parts of the breast plate of armour providing an introduction to the groups next couple of sessions. The boys were able to identify what it means to wear the breast plate and the significance of it all.

 

Mentor Bruce Bean covered the second session for the health & fitness group.  The lesson was on being healthy and what can of exercises the young men can do.

Thanks to Ms.Yarborough for bringing the mentors an great healthy meal. She made turkey wraps, muffins, apples and tangerines. She also bought Orange juice. It was more than enough for the boys and mentors alike.  

Warrior Passage hopes everyone had a Great Christmas Holiday and we are also looking forward to the New Year.  Next warrior passage meeting will be Jan 7th 2012.

 

 

Warrior Passage gets in shape!

At the last warrior passage meeting, the mentees continued to discuss the movie they watched last time.  After that discussion was complete, the mentor went into the real reason for Christmas.  The mentees also got to tell what Christmas means to them.

After the all the discussions, it was time to leave the classroom and break a sweat.  The mentees were divided into five groups and they were given exercises to do over the holiday break.  A handout with the exercise instructions was also distributed.  There were 18 mentees in attendance.

Warrior Passage at the Movies!

Last Warrior Passage meeting the young men snacked on some popcorn and watched a movie entitled, "The Prince of Egypt".  To give a summery of the movie:

"This is the extraordinary tale of two brothers named Moses and Ramses, one born of royal blood, and one an orphan with a secret past. Growing up the best of friends, they share a strong bond of free-spirited youth and good-natured rivalry. But the truth will ultimately set them at odds, as one becomes the ruler of the most powerful empire on earth, and the other the chosen leader of his people! Their final confrontation will forever change their lives and the world."

After the movie, there was a Question and Answer session to discuss the events in the movie versus the events in the Bible.  Next Warrior Passage Meeting will be Dec 3rd, 10:00am at Body of Christ Church.

Ten Commandments vs. Man's Laws

Judge Vince Rozier from the Wake County Court House lead a very exciting and engaging warrior passage meeting.   The subject was the Ten Commandments vs. the current laws of the government.  The mentees were first challenged to see if they know all the commandments.  Then, they had to figure out which commandments are laws of the government today.

The next lesson was interactive, requiring the mentees role play in certain situations.  The main event was a mock court room with an judge, lawyers, and jury.  The final session was Q & A which used the final 20 minutes of the meeting.  We thank Judge Rozier for guest speaking to our group.

Next Meeting will be on November 19^th at 10:00am.  We will be watching a movie, and discussing the main biblical topics highlighted in the movie.

Warrior Passage Meeting Oct 22, 2011- 10 Commandments

Warrior Passage meet on October 22, 2011 and discuss and Moses theme for Spiritual Development and Character Development. Thurman Ross, Kamau Henderson, and Shiron Vick had a collaborative group effort in teaching the two sections. The focus was the life of Moses and some of the special events he was a part of including the 10 commandments.

The Bible verses for a reference where Exodus 3:11,14 and Exodus 20. Next Warrior Passage meeting will be on November 5th, 10:00am where will have special guest Judge Vince Rozier to discuss God's law vs. Man's Law.
